AP® Music Theory is a fundamental course for future professionals in music education, theory, composition and performance. Students learn the skills that are required for all-around musicianship in various styles of tonal music. These skills include: listening and evaluating tonal structure and form; comprehending harmonic progressions and recognizing chromatic and non-chord embellishments; and constructing effective melodic ideas for the underlying harmonies. This course provides students with the tools of superior musicianship such as: enhanced sight-reading, aural recognition, and compositional techniques.
The techniques of tonal harmony are learned through active writing, listening, sight-singing and sight-reading exercises which specifically address concepts covered in the AP Music Theory Exam. Our AP Music Theory syllabus is approved by the College Board.
This course is recommended for high school students who meet the following criteria:
- MTAC Certificate of Merit® level 10 or equivalent
- Performance proficiency in a pitched musical instrument
- Basic piano & notation skills
